How important is it to have Singaporeans writing plays for Singaporeans? Give reasons to support your answer.
I think that it is quite important for Singaporeans to write plays for other Singaporeans. Singapore is lacking of people who can write plays well. If fewer and fewer people are writing plays, it means that Singapore will have lesser and lesser plays too.
Currently, I think that Singapore has more Chinese plays or drama than English plays and drama.
If we look at the other countries in the world, I think that Singapore is lacking of plays. I believe that a lot of Singaporeans can be talented play writers.
However, the plays may influence the people watching it. Plays are used to reflect the country's culture and language.
As a Singaporean, I of course will understand what is being played in the plays. However, our language is always Singlish. It means that only our Singaporeans will understand the language spoken, for example: lah.. loh.. cheh.. leh.. etc...
In other countries, the language spoken is international and can be understood by other countries' viewers. Therefore, we Singaporeans should also speak proper english too to let other viewers know what we are talking about. Singaporean plays like "Phua Chu Kang" can tell us that Sinagporeans love to say a lot of Singlish and one popular 'phrase' in this play is "don't play play huh" This is obviously a sentence full of broken english. That is why we must see the need that not only our language is bad, it actually reflects on our language ability. However, as plays can reflect on one's country background, it is still quite good, to know that we Singaporeans have an unique language.
Recently, an article reported that Korean is trying to limit the number of local plays. That shows that Korea has a lot of plays. Korea has too many plays and they want to limit it. Singapore yet, has little plays that Singapore always have to play other countires' plays for our own entertainment.
Singaporeans should be more creative in writing plays. If you look at the other countries' plays, you can see that their plays are more interesting and won't always be the same old story.
In conclusion, I think that it is important to have Singaporeans writing plays for other Singaporeans.:)
